Getting closer to there

The class I teach in is not the one I learnt in as a teenager; it is not even the one I was trained to teach in; nor is it the class I started teaching in nearly two decades ago. And, possibly because of this, it is not yet the class that will best prepare my students for life in the twenty first century either.

Here’s my struggle to get from here closer to there…

The Hashtags

A dozen 21st century skills

My methodology is largely defined by efforts to help students develop these 21st century skills:

  1. Critical thinking
  2. Creativity
  3. Collaboration
  4. Communication
  5. Information literacy
  6. Media literacy
  7. Technology literacy
  8. Flexibility
  9. Leadership
  10. Initiative
  11. Productivity
  12. Social skills

What a classroom speaks

I would like my teaching to cultivate positive values promoting:

  • Inclusion of gender, race and abilities;
  • Motivation for the subject;
  • Positive values for global citizenship;
  • Good mental health, support venues and support groups.

I feel that the general layout and the very walls of the class themselves: the ambience if you will, are key in defining a learning space.

The List

Read/Watch/Think/Change

This is a little list of online articles, videos, teaching resources and books that I feel have directly or otherwise helped develop, or at least locate weaknesses in, my methodology.

I am grateful for everything I come across that makes me question my practice, but in some areas I’m still looking for answers.

The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn.
